Fort Sheridan is a 230-acre residential community nestled on the banks of Lake Michigan in the North Shore area of Illinois. Established as a military base in the 1800s, the community now features restored historic architecture, modern conveniences, and gorgeous green spaces. Located in the cities of Lake Forest, Highwood, and Highland Park, Fort Sheridan real estate offers picturesque, lakeside living in close proximity to Chicago, one of the nation’s most vibrant cities.

Shopping and Dining

Fort Sheridan residents have convenient access to some of the best shopping and dining options in the North Shore. Downtown Highland Park is home to more than 125 shops, 30 eateries, and numerous entertainment venues, including Sunset Foods, Anthropologie, Chico’s, Lori’s Designer Shoes, My Best Friend’s Closet, The Bootery, Uncle Dan’s Great Outdoor Store, Bella Via Ristorante, City Park Grill, Sushi Badaya, The BBQ Pit, and the Landmark Renaissance Place Cinema. Highwood is known for its consignment stores, including Consignments Etc... and Jordan Joseph Encore, both of which have been voted “Best of the Best” by North Shore Magazine. It also is home to some of the best restaurants in the region. La Casa de Isaac, Froggy’s French Café, Miramar Bistro, Gabriels Italian, Del Rio Italian, and Buffo’s Pizza are just a few of the local favorites. Antique stores, bars, and clubs line the streets of downtown Highwood. Trendy boutiques, elegant clothiers, and upscale shops, can be found in Lake Forest, renowned as one of the best-dressed places in the country. Discerning shoppers will find Historic Market Square in Lake Forest a good place to look for designer goods.

Parks and Recreation

The 54-acre Fort Sheridan Parade Grounds is a beautifully maintained historic preserve that meticulously captures the community’s military past. Buildings on the grounds include the landmark water tower, the theater, the stockade, the barracks, and the officers’ quarters. A number of nature trails wind through the community and offer spectacular views of the trees and rolling terrain. Some lead to the lake, while others center around the Hutchinson Ravine. Fort Sheridan also boasts 0.75 miles of undeveloped shoreline on Lake Michigan. Residents can park at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve and walk down the paved path to the scenic beach. Art classes and seminars are offered at the Rotblatt-Amrany Fine Art Studio, located in the historic military theater. Music lessons and concerts are provided by Midwest Young Artists.

Living

A small community of less than 1,000 people, Fort Sheridan real estate is best known for its mature oak trees, undeveloped shoreline, and beautiful historic buildings. The renovated buildings have been transformed to maintain their original historic facades while enjoying all technological advances of the new millennium indoors. The result is breathtaking single-family residences, condos, townhomes, and brownstone-like residences, most with 11-20 foot ceilings and eight-foot-tall picture windows. New construction homes also are available. Zip code is 60037. Median home cost in 2012 was $394,600.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

The award-winning Highland Park School District serves the children of Fort Sheridan. The community’s elementary school, Oak Terrace, is the newest in the district and is housed in a $10 million, state-of-the-art facility. Older children attend Northwood Junior High School and Highland Park High School. Some of the best parochial and private schools in the nation also are located close by in Lake Forest.

The Highland Park Hospital is located on Park Ave. West in Highland Park and provides acute care and emergency care services to Fort Sheridan residents. Metra buses and rail services connect Fort Sheridan to nearby communities, downtown Chicago, and the Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
